1993 May 23 The Washington Post begins publishing portions of the late Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall's papers. Immediately following Marshall's death, his papers are made available for use by "researchers or scholars engaged in serious research." Billington a letter admonishing him for lack of judgment in releasing the papers so soon. Marshall's friends, family, and colleagues displayed similar feelings of anger at the papers' speedy release.
