1910 The first edition of Crisis Magazine, edited by W. E. B. DuBois, appears in New York. Only 1,000 copies are in print, but before the end of the decade circulation of the magazine has increased one-hundred fold. Among the articles in the first edition, is one by DuBois in which he maintains that individuals should be free to marry whomever they choose. He concedes, however, that such an enlightened policy would cause a social calamity in the United States.
