This website is dedicated to the memory of Vannevar Bush (1890-1974) and his 1945 essay "As We May Think" in which he proposed a revolutionary hypertext engine he called the Memex. Bush first wrote of the Memex early in the 1930s; however, it was not until 1945 that "As We May Think" was published in Atlantic Monthly. The following year Bush reprinted his article in Endless Horizons (1946) and wrote about it further in two later books: Science is Not Enough (1967) and Pieces of the Action (1970).

Bush's conception of the Memex popularized, for the first time, the idea of an easily accessible, individually configurable storehouse of knowledge. In his own words - "a device in which an individual could store all of his books, records and communications, and which is mechanized so that it may be consulted with exceeding speed and flexibility."

Bush's main point - the primary reason for his Memex - was that having all the information in the world is useless if we have no way of efficiently archiving and quickly accessing it. He also saw the ability to navigate the enormous amounts of data as a far more important development than futuristic hardware.

Bush envisioned a free exchange of all information, making all knowledge available as a fundamental basis for expanding our collective intelligences and social interactions, as well as international cultural and scientific advancements. MegaMemex hopes to expand Bush's vision to include all of Human history.
