MegaMemex Chronographical Search Engine™
GO TO MEMEGAMEMEX HOMEPAGE
MegaMemex.Com is a cooperative international history project designed to automatically import various timelines and other dated historical information from online contributors into a massive Chronographical TimeBase. Our current archival system allows us to quickly import, archive and retrieve more than one million individually dated events for every day in history since the beginning of time. TimeBase search results are returned chronologically.

Students, educators, journalists, researchers and history buffs are all invited to submit historical information on any subject, as long as their sources can be fact-checked and verified. Submissions can easily be sent to our staff using our - Online Contribution Form.

Before you begin your search please take a few minutes to download and install the following Free Downloads. Our staff highly recommends all three to get the most out of MegaMemex and its huge Chronographical Archive.™

1. The FREE Google Toolbar is an indispensable Tool - DOWNLOAD

NOTE: The Google Toolbar is especially useful because it allows users to highlight any word or phrase, on any page, with a Left Click as usual, and then automatically run a super fast Google Search with one easy click of the Right mouse button.

2. Free Web Browser Extensions for Internet Explorer 6 - DOWNLOAD

NOTE: IE Booster is a freeware collection of tools that extend the context menu of the MS Internet Explorer (version 5+) web browser for Windows. You may already be familiar with the IE Web Accessories for IE5 published by MS in 1999, but these do not work with IE6 and MS has not published an update.

3. RealPlayer™ from REAL.COM is required for Videos - DOWNLOAD

Syntax for the MegaMemex Search Form

1. As a general rule it is better to keep your Search query as simple as possible. Use single words whenever possible to produce the most inclusive search. When searching for proper names, enter LAST NAME ONLY and then narrow your search. The only exceptions are common names such as Smith, Brown or King. Use syntax below:

Martin and Luther and King

2. When searching for dates, please use the following style:

"June 25" or "June 25" 1940

Simple Statements:
==================
and : roosevelt and stalin and churchill
or : roosevelt or stalin or churchill
+ : 1933+november+9
double-quote : "november 9"
combination : hitler and "1889 april 20"
                   hitler or april+20

Complex Statement:
=================
nested:
churchill and (hitler or stalin) and (may+5 or "june 6")

Do not use commas, symbols, punctuation or abbreviations. If the user wishes to scan all of the events in a particular year, simply type in the year and hit enter. After it has been located, scroll through the timeline at will. The user may then click on any item to view its associated audio, video or photographic material.

Useful Information and Background

This site has been designed for screen resolutions of either 1024x768 or 800x600 pixels. If you are a 640x480 user, please click their browser's Full Screen button to see the entire screen. Click it now if you haven't done so already. On the plus side, streaming video appears larger and seems to stream better at 640x480. Choice of resolution is up to you.

All information on this site can be accessed using three different modes: the Research Mode, the Video Mode, or the Multimedia Mode. Both the Video and Multimedia Modes are currently under construction.

The Research Mode is similar to an ordinary search engine, but returns search results in chronological order of occurrance, rather than frequency of keywords. Users can view any video, while at the same time browsing the TimeBase™ and other on-site resources, simply by clicking on any of the available RealPlayer™ video interfaces.

The Video Mode is designed for those who prefer to sit back and watch a compiled video without accessing other research information on the site.

The Multimedia Mode automatically presents a wide variety of multimedia data with the click of a single button - the play button on the Multimedia Portal. Video may be paused and restarted at any time during the presentation. Again, the choice is up to the individual user.

In both Research and Video Modes, a complete word-for-word V/O script will be available for browsing while the video is playing - allowing the user to follow along in real time - pausing the video at will to explore additional information.

Reference and Sources are shown at the end of many entries in the Chronography™, TIMEBASE™ and other information pages. If the note is shown in italics it refers to the reference's Title; otherwise it refers to the author's last name. Click on any links to jump to the source of that reference.
